지구를 위협하는 작은 천체들 NEOs

잘 느끼지 못할 수도 있지만,
우리는 항상 생존의 위협을 받으며 살아가고 있다.
인간.
만물의 영장이라고 하지만 자연의 한 피조물일 수 밖에..

이런 위협에는 여러가지가 있겠지만,
그 중에는 우리 뜻대로 되지 않는 자연의 섭리인 것들도 많다.
예를 들어 화산활동, 지진, 쓰나미 등등
이제는 인간의 지적 수준이 높아짐에 따라서
이런 지구의 위협 외에도
우주로 눈을 돌려 우주의 종말, 또는 지구 자체의 종말까지 걱정하고 있다.

다큐멘타리를 보면 공룡의 멸종, 소행성의 충돌 등의 주제가 심심치 않게 나온다.
사실 이런 위협들은 과학자들보다는
공상과학소설을 쓰는 소설가들이 먼저 생각해 냈다고도 할 수 있다.
요즘에는 과학자들의 좀 더 사실적인 데이터에
영화 감독들의 상상력과 그래픽이 더해져 지구 종말에 관한 영화도 많이 나왔고,
우리가 지구를 살릴 수 있는 방법도 여럿 제시되었다.

그럼 이런 위협은 실제로 존재하는 것일까?
예, 아니오 로 대답하라면 대답은 "예"이다.

영화나 다큐멘타리에서 자주 보듯이 지구 종말의 위협이 되는 것은
태양계를 떠돌아 다니던 돌덩이들이다.
그렇다고 우주를 막 떠돌아 다니던 돌덩이들이 위협이 되는 것은 아니다.
태양계는 어느정도 물리법칙을 따르고 있기 때문에
특별한 일이 없는 한 대부분의 돌덩이들은 지구에 위협이 되지 못한다.
그들중 지구에 가깝거나, 그 궤도가 지구 궤도와 겹치는 것들을 따로 분류한다.
이들을 NEOs라고 한다.
(여기서 혜성은 뺀다. 혜성은 소행성만큼 수적으로나 충돌가능성으로나 확률이 아주 적다.)
또한 이들(NEOs)중에서 지구에 아주 가까이 접근하는 소행성을 "PHA"라고 한다.
1993년까지 PHA는 166개였으나, 이 중 1999년에 0.2AU 이내에 근접한 소행성들은
지구와의 충돌 확률이 모두 10억 분의 1 이하였다.
 
아래에는 NASA에서 제공하는 NEOs의 데이터를 첨부한다.
이 데이터는 미래(2007년 10월 1일 ~ 2200년)에 5LD 이내로 접근하는 NEOs의 목록이다.
1LD는 지구-달까지의 거리이다.

Close-Approach Date  Date and time (TDB) of closest Earth approach distance. "Nominal Date" is given to appropriate precision. The 3-sigma uncertainty in the time is given in the +/- column in days_hours:minutes format (for example, "2_15:23" is 2 days, 15 hours, 23 minutes).
Miss Distance (LD,AU)  The most likely (Nominal) and minimum possible (Minimum) miss distances are given in LD (Lunar Distance) and AU. The minimum possible distance is based on the 3-sigma Earth target-plane error ellipse.
V relative (km/s)  Object velocity relative to Earth at close-approach in km/s.
V infinity (km/s)  Object velocity relative to a massless Earth at close-approach in km/s.
N-sig  The factor by which the target-plane error ellipse must be scaled to allow for an Earth grazing impact.
H (Vm)  Asteroid absolute V-magnitude (in general, smaller H implies larger asteroid diameter). Undefined for comets.

class  Object classification: NEA="Near-Earth Asteroid", AMO="Amor", APO="Apollo", ATE="Aten", or IEO="Interior Earth Object". A trailing "*" indicates the object is also a potentially hazardous asteroid. (see definitions)
 
(AU)  Astronomical distance Unit: 1.0 AU is about 1.5x10^8 km (roughly the average distance between the Earth and the Sun).
(LD)  Lunar Distance: 1.0 LD is about 3.84x10^5 km or 0.00257 AU (the average distance between the Earth and the Moon).

보면 알겠지만 157개의 소행성이 5LD이내로 접근하고 그 중 18개만이 1LD이내로 접근한다.
2029년에 약간 위험한 존재가 눈에 띄긴 하지만,
태양계의 여러 중력관계에 의해서 이 마져도 아직은 불확실하다.
다만 우리가 좀 더 주의깊게 관찰할 필요는 있겠다.

하지만 이런 걱정을 한다고 해서 자연의 섭리를 거스를 수는 없을것이다.
물론 영화처럼 미사일이나 레이져, 또는 폭탄을 이용해서 파괴시키는 방법도 있겠지만
우리는 그런 과학기술에 무지하다.
우리는 단지 하루하루를 열심히 살아가는데 좀 더 힘써야 하지 않을까..
